The Down-Low on Invoice Pricing from Chevrolet Montana Dealers

Chevrolet Montana

Invoice pricing. You see this term on ads, posters, and websites promoting new cars for sale in Montana.

You hear and see it a lot, but what does it mean exactly — and why should you care?

There’s MSRP, Then There’s Invoice Pricing

MSRP, which stands for "manufacturer's suggested retail price," is known as the "sticker price." Most Chevy Montana dealerships use this as a selling price for vehicles. MSRP is much different from invoice pricing, and it's important to understand the distinction when you're shopping new cars and trucks for sale in Montana.

Chevrolet Montana dealers encounter invoice pricing when purchasing vehicles from manufacturers. For example, when one of us here at Denny Menholt Chevrolet purchases a vehicle from our manufacturer, General Motors, we receive an invoice. That invoice from General Motors lists the price that we (as dealers) must pay them before selling the vehicle on our lot.

To put it simply, dealers pay invoice pricing when purchasing vehicles from the manufacturer.

How Invoice Pricing Affects Chevy Montana Dealers

But dealerships need to turn a profit after purchasing vehicles at invoice price. Therefore, most Chevrolet Montana dealers sell vehicles at a slightly higher level — known as MSRP.

When you're browsing cars for sale in Montana, you'll see a lot of MSRP. And it's important to understand how much wiggle room dealers have to work with. Dealers usually set MSRP as their starting point because it helps (almost) guarantee they make a profit on the vehicle, after having paid the invoice price to the manufacturer.

And while you as the buyer have a bit of room to negotiate, you will almost always pay more than the invoice price, even if you work the price quite away down from MSRP. If you'd like to look into how to find the "sweet spot" between the two prices, check out Cars.com and Edmunds' helpful tools: Smart Target Price and True Market Value.
