Blair Chambers was born to work in the car business.
After all, his mother worked in the industry for years. She started bringing Blair around the dealership that she co-owned in Memphis when he was just a little boy.
Fast-forward a few decades, and Blair has now worked in the Billings auto industry for close to 20 years. He's been one of our most trusted salespeople at Denny Menholt Chevrolet, your #1 Chevy Montana dealership, for nine years. How long have you been working in car sales?
I've been at Denny Menholt Chevrolet for nine years, but I've been in the car business my whole life. My mom worked in the business, and I took a chip off the old block from her.
We grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. I can remember all the way back to when I was a little boy, picking weeds at the dealership, then helping around after high school.
When I got out of service in the Marine Corps after college, I started getting into car sales on and off before finally making sure it was my life choice as a career.
So really, I was always around the car business — it's in my blood.
How did you mother influence your decision to sell cars for sale in Montana?
My mother really encouraged me to get into the car business.
I was never shy about talking to people. Growing up, my grandparents had a country store in Arkansas, so customer service was always paramount in my family. It just made sense for me to work in car sales.
The funny part about my mother — she would never let me work for her. When I first told her I was going to get into the car business, she told me to come to her office at 9 a.m. with my suit on. I showed up for work . . . and she called somebody over at the Toyota store, saying that I was looking for a job.
My mother didn't believe in nepotism; she said it caused more problems than it solved. That worked out well for me.
My twin brother and I came out here to Billings on a fishing trip about 20 years ago and decided to move here. We wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of Memphis.
Now, we've established our families out here. I've been married almost seven years; it seems like everything has fallen into place.
Before I came to Denny Menholt Chevrolet, I bounced different dealers around here, but I never really found my niche. I didn't like the way a lot of those stores did business, didn't like the way they treated their employees.
I've been with Denny Menholt for nine years now, and I've found a home here. I like the people I work with; I like my clients. I've always enjoyed working here.
What do you do here at Denny Menholt Chevrolet?
I'm in sales — I've always stayed in sales. I never wanted to get into management. My job keeps me closer to my clients, keeps me busier.
I try to take really good care of my clients; that's the first and foremost thing I do. Of course, that brings in referrals and repeats, which makes my job fun!
I always get excited when I sell a car. I had the same feeling the first time I sold a car as I did when I sold one yesterday. It's very rewarding to help people find the right car.
What do you love most about your job?
Dealing with the public. Being an "everyday hero."
What makes this Chevy Montana store different from other local dealerships?
Denny himself came from sales, so he actually identifies with the sales force here. He really takes care of his staff.
A lot of us have been here for a very long time, so you have a real sense of family at Denny Menholt Chevrolet. If I took a week off to take my family to Mount Rushmore, I know I wouldn't have any problem with people here watching my back.
That's why I stay here. The management takes good care of me, and I try to make sure everyone else is taken care of in return.
I like to get out and go camping or play golf.
Hanging out with family is also important to me. I have two children and a great marriage. My twin brother and my grandson are also here in Billings, so we do a lot of family stuff up here, especially over the holidays. I'm very family-oriented.
What's your favorite vehicle you've ever owned?
My first car: a '67 Chevy Chevelle. It was a great car to drive around and go on dates with. I have a lot of fond memories of that car!
What's something customers may not know about you?
They probably wouldn't know I applied to be on Jeopardy! I didn't get on the show, but I went through the whole process when they came through Billings back in '05, and they said I was a finalist. (I'm kind of a trivia buff.)
Growing up in Memphis, my brother and I got to meet Elvis. And back in the day, I sang in a few rock-and-roll bands. We were even in Musician magazine at one point.
Now, as I'm getting older, it's all just karaoke!
How might your coworkers describe you?
"Talkative." That's probably the best word to describe me!
